Once the body is off we found the truck very easy to work on. They are direct replacements for the Rey, and will fit the stock parts. It has decent ergonomics, but we would really like to see it come with a foam covered wheel. While it turned ok, it certainly doesn’t turn nearly as well as its cousin the Losi SCTE 2.0. Just fine actually, and we tended to dial in about 50% while bashing on loose surfaces. Losi Baja Rey Review. Test Venues: Just one, Badlands Off Road Park just outside Attic, Indiana. It comes equipped with a Dynamite® 3800Kv brushless power system, as well as a long-travel suspension, so you can tear across all types of terrain at speeds of 45mph or more! Was the truck destroyed? With powerful performance and incredible scale looks, the SBR 2.0 takes it to the next level! These UPPER a-arms are from Metal Concepts RC for the Losi Baja Rey.. Oh btw, while getting the body off can take some time, the motor is very easy to get to. You simply remove 3 screws on the bottom of the chassis and the motor is right there. Let that sink in for a just a minute. It took all sorts of stupidity to break it, making it arguably the toughest large scale vehicle that we’ve tested. While the rear can step out when pounding deep whoops WFO, for the most part the Losi is big enough to ignore most “normal” sized bumps. Not yet reviewed. “I” picked this truck up at my local hobby shop a week ago after I noticed my other RC truck needed to be completely rebuilt. LOL. Its tremendous size allows it to go places that an 8th scale just can’t go, like over large rocks, big dirt clumps, and over wider chasms. The Super Baja Rey suffered no damage! The Baja Rey comes with an EC3 that is not easy to switch out. The Losi® Baja Rey™ desert truck is built on one of the most advanced chassis ever conceived for an off-road vehicle. Fun Factor: A Wanna have some fun? Build Quality: Out of the box we could find no faults with our test sample. Well, we treated our test unit with the utmost disrespect and it held up like a champ. So while we didn’t get in nearly as many packs as we normally get to, it was fantastic to have the Losi guys right there to answer any of our immediate questions. From Losi:Based on the Losi® Rey® platform, the 1/10th 2.2 Rock Rey rock racer takes no prisoners. Is it worth your hard earned cash? The Losi Super Baja Rey is not only big, coming in at 1/6th scale, but it is also designed to look exactly like a full sized short course race truck. Even though the Super Baja Rey is “only” 1/6 scale, it gets the Dynamite Fuze 160-amp speed control that is used in Losi’s larger and heavier 1/5-scale vehicles. On the second jump we tried to launch off the peak of the third story roof. We didn’t have any problems fitting a Dynamite 2S 5000 pack, but some packs did not fit well (or at all). If you crave a realistic, 1/10-scale desert truck experience, complete with the ridiculous power and awesome off-road capabilities the full-scale versions are famous for, look no further than this. Get ready to have your mind blown with the 1/6th scale Losi® Super Baja Rey® desert truck! Two New Brushless 1/8-scale Motors from Hobbywing: XeRu... Unboxing Video Kyosho 1969 Chevy El Camino SS 396. Otherwise, it had enough speed that none of our test drivers complained. This exciting new radio control truck boasts a lot of the same features as the Super Rock rey, just in 1/10 form. Our test crew even got in a bunch of laps on a legit 8th scale outdoor track, St Louis Dirtburners. Upgrades. Bumps/Whoops: The suspension on the Baja Rey is not set-up for maximum performance, it is set-up for ok performance while giving the truck a scale look when being driven. The Losi® Baja Rey® desert truck is built on one of the most advanced chassis ever conceived for a ready-to-run vehicle. It embodies everything drivers love about the desert and rock racing culture, and features a new cage and bodywork that looks just like the full-scale vehicles. Build Quality: We found the Baja Rey to be well assembled from the factory. Where are the body clips? Switching over to 6S really brought the Super Baja Rey alive. Taking the Super Rock Rey chassis, adding about an inch to the wheelbase and morphing it with the front end from the Super Baja Rey gets you the all new and improved Super Baja Rey 2.0! Not yet reviewed. Power from a dead stop is impressive, then it rips through the mid-range, which is followed by a top-end that seems to keep pulling forever. There are a couple of trends that we’ve been seeing in recent years. But of course if one roof jump isn’t enough to really break it, a second was in order, so that’s what we did. Fun Factor: A While not a perfect truck, it was amazing how much the guys fought over the controller to drive it. Both worked well for us and added a great touch of scale realism. I have a 1/5th scale HP Baja 5b w/ 30.5cc, 2-speed CVT, a Traxxas Ultimate Desert Racer w/a VLX-8s ESC and lots of mods, and then most recently this bind & drive Losi Super Baja Rey. Charging was done by a Dynamite multi-port charger. BigSquid Rating: A- The Losi Super Baja Rey is a beast! Why is that? The Baja Rey is modeled after full scale desert trucks and includes some pretty impressive features! Actually, we did notice that it had more than enough torque to keep the beast’s wheels turned at speed. Yes, we were extra hard on the Losi, but that was because we HAD to be. Its big power and scale looks never failed to put a smile on our tester’s faces. Yes, you can have fun on-road with the Baja Rey, but there are other trucks in the Losi line-up (like the SCTE 2.0) that do a much better job. What’s Needed To Complete: The Baja Rey comes fully pre-built and RTR. Where the Mojave was a 1/7th scale truck, this is a bigger truck, and in typical Losi fashion, appointed with better quality parts than the Arrma (don’t get me wrong, Arrma makes a fabulous vehicle, tuned to the bashers, but Losi is on a whole different level). I mean, think about it, jumping a heavy 1/6th scale vehicle from the roof of a 3 story building is sure to destroy it, right? They flex like crazy, or at least more than we’ve ever seen a wheel flex before, which causes them to be continually tweaked. While on the servo topic, the stock servo saver was wayyyy too weak. Plus, the soft wheels make traction rolling worse while driving on high-bite surfaces. We only tested the Baja Rey is what we would call “hot” temps, meaning we only drove the truck in ambient temps above 80 degrees F. We mention this because the motor in our test unit ran quite warm, above 140 F on a typical run, so you won’t want to gear your Baja Rey any taller, and if you happen to pop in a 3S pack you will seriously want to gear down. Very much like it’s smaller 1/10th scale sibling. Overview. However, you will find that parts are readily available on-line. Just like on the smaller 1/10th Baja Rey, the Super uses the same style of battery tray. Our test kit was purchased at the world famous Pacific Coast Hobbies (thanks Theo!) Otherwise, other 1/10th 4wd short course trucks (SCTE, Slash 4×4, SC10 4×4, etc) could also be considered competition. The Losi Baja Rey Ready to Run Trophy Truck is built on one of the most advanced chassis ever conceived for a ready-to-run vehicle. The stock wheels were way, wayyyyy, too soft. This resulted in very sloppy steering. The Baja Rey features loads of scale detailing on the outside, with a brushless power system, AVC stability control, and a solid rear axle on the inside. Grass: Want to talk about a beast? No, the Losi isn’t as easy to wrench on as a truck with a “traditional” layout, but we didn’t find it difficult either. The way we tested the Super Baja Rey was much different than our normal test routine. Also of note, because the Baja Rey has so much rip on tap, when the nose starts to dip a generous stab of the throttle would typically level it out. Very, very, cool. Parts Availability: N/A At the time of this writing the truck has not been announced to the public. Review by William L. on 5 Dec 2020 review stating Losi Baja rey As always I love Towerhobbies for the great selection and fast shipping. On loose surfaces, the front is well planted while the rear tended to swing around quickly with very little side-bite. That may have ended our day of testing, but the truck withstood so much abuse that we were left utterly impressed on how much punishment a truck of its stature could withstand. We’ve been seeing vehicles get bigger and more scale looking. Baja Rey 1/10-Scale Desert Truck. The Losi ® Super Baja Rey 2.0 with Spektrum ™ Smart is the new standard in 1/6th-scale desert trucks. Video. Turning: The Baja Rey is a tale of two trucks. Power: The Baja Rey certainly does not lack for power, even on 2S. We’ve been seeing vehicles get bigger and more scale looking. All the extra size and weight also make it more stable and easier to drive than smaller scales. The tires and foams are good, the stock wheels need replaced ASAP. Time To Bash: B After charging up a pack it took us very little time to start bashing with the Baja Rey. Radio: Included with the Losi is one of the newer Spektrum DX2E Active radios. We never experienced any glitching and we had more range than we ever attempted to use during our testing period. Otherwise, other 1/10th 4wd short course trucks (SCTE, Slash 4×4, SC10 4×4, etc) could also be considered competition. While it does comes with four AA cells for the transmitter, you’ll need to pick up a battery pack (with EC3 connector) and a charger to get started bashing. The locked rear diff and aggressive tires did a fine job of shoving the Baja Rey through some serious grass. Because of BigSquidRC getting an exclusive first test on the truck, we had one day to drive it, film it, take video of it, and to break it. This is a Brushless 4×4 off-road RC Truck and is meant for off-road bashing, And that’s just what I plan to do with it. The DX2E also sports Horizon’s electronic stability control called AVC. Bash-A-Bility: A How tough is the Super Baja Rey? Write a Review. While not some uber high-end unit, the DX2E gets the job done and was generally liked by our test crew. We never really noticed the stock servo. A = Outstanding/Best in Class, B = Above Average, C = Average, D = Below Average, F = Horrific. On many 4WDs we rarely use it, but found it really handy on the Baja Rey. Bumps/Whoops: Oh ya! This ended up snapping off one edge of the front shock tower. This beast is setting new standards with its scale detail and adrenaline-pumping 50+ mph speeds. Therefore, we would recommend spending your first cash on scale accessories or items that help customize it to your specific driving (like shock springs and oil). Is the Baja Rey the ultimate scale desert truck? Well, it isn’t nimble like an 1/8th scale buggy, it is a big hulking machine. The big Losi also sports serious power thanks to a large Dynamite brushless power system. Wrong. There are a couple of trends that we’ve been seeing in recent years. Plan on either buying all EC3 equipped packs or soldering up an adapter. For power, we ran both 4 and 6S worth of LiPo power thanks to Dynamite Reaction batteries. While one of the front shocks was a bit low on oil, the others were properly filled and not leaking. Then I saw the announcement for the version 2 of the Losi Super Baja Rey. Submit Review. Handling: B The Losi is big on stability and quite easy to drive, even at crazy brushless speeds. Power: The stock brushless power system did a fine job in our test truck, but we found we liked it a whole lot more on 6S than on 4. If you are used to driving smaller 1/8th or 1/10th sized trucks, the big Losi will feel much different to you. Best Mod: While the stock tires are fine, the stock wheels are not. The Losi tended to ignore all but the worst of kickers and ruts on jumps faces, mostly thanks to its large size, and its suspension did an admirable job of soaking up landings. This resulted in a bad landing that ended up breaking the rear axle housing. Does all of its bells and whistles make it a good truck? Overview. Broken Parts: Ya know, we think the Losi crew that was out watching us test might think we’ve lost all our marbles. Hey, how does the AVC work on the Losi? What does that mean to the BigSquidRC Bash Crew? With powerful performance and incredible scale looks, the SBR 2.0 takes it to the next level! Losi Baja Rey Ford Raptor 1/10 RTR 4WD Brushless Desert Truck (Black Rhino) w/2.4GHz Radio & AVC. With that said, where we were testing had a 65 foot tabletop on its full sized motocross track. Value: B The Baja Rey looks so good and has so much power on tap that we felt it is a solid buy for the money. Ya, we think the Losi guys were really thinking of us bashers while designing the Super Baja Rey. If so, Losi has launched its second-generation 1/6-scale desert truck, the Super Baja Rey 2.0.This super-scale off-road truck is big on size and on scale details. While we were bummed to see the truck finally break, that also meant that the truck was a bit broken, but still drivable. Available in Stores. Radio: The Baja Rey comes with the Horizon “go to” radio, a Spektrum DX2E. Well… the Baja Rey was designed for maximum scale appearance, it doesn’t have body clips because you need to remove 12 screws to get the body/cage off. Then, when you throw in its high tech Spektrum AVC electronic stability system, it has all the makings of an epic modern bash machine. By the way, because the truck comes with an Active version of the DX2E, you can bolt on the Active speedometer, plus you can add telemetry, etc. Which brings us to the stock battery connector. Well, within a few days of finishing that review, the Losi Ford Raptor Baja Rey 4WD Desert Truck showed up on our doorstep for review. However, we did find out what we needed to know. No, the Baja Rey doesn’t drive well on-road, it traction rolls all the time and its torque steer is much more pronounced. Don’t you just love scale touches? Instead of feeling darty, it just pounds over (or through) anything in its path. For power we used a Dynamite 2S LiPo while a Hitec X1 Pro handled the charging duties. The Losi has a tremendous amount of suspension travel which of course helps it make short work out of all sorts of gnarly terrain. $299.99. This rock racers new front-end geometry adds the needed handling for racing while taking advantage … An idea I’m toying with is replacing the stock bar with the Hot Racing Losi Rock Rey Aluminum Front Sway Bar Set (HRALRR311F). On-Road: Nope, can you even believe it, we didn’t get a chance to do any on-road driving with the Losi. Badlands offered just about everything a hardcore off-roader could want. They sport a nice scale inspired tread design and the foams were right in the ballpark for general off-road driving. They come with the end link as seen in the Photo. How much fun it is to drive? Product Information. It had hundreds of acres of sand, large rock sections, endless whoop-de-dos, gravel, and even a full blown motocross track. We put some batteries in the transmitter, then a pair of 3S Dynamite LiPo batteries in the truck. Yes, it still tends to jump slightly nose low, but not bad enough to be of a major concern. The Losi Super Baja Rey is not only big, coming in at 1/6th scale, but it is also designed to look exactly like a full sized short course race truck. Posted by Cubby in Car & Truck Reviews, Featured Posts on Thursday, December 28th, 2017 at 10:27 am. Back Order. Workability: C There is a price to be paid for all those awesome scale looks, that is when it comes time to spin wrenches. Check the video below. To get the beast up and running you won’t need a lot, but you will need 4 to 6S worth of LiPo power for the truck, four AA cells for the transmitter, and a battery charger. Nitro Hobbies Test Venues: With the Losi being a truck designed for a variety of off-road driving, we ran it at several different venues. Broken Parts: The Baja Rey turned out to be a beast when we started driving it aggressively. The newest addition to my RC Vehicles is the Losi Baja Rey. On high-bite surfaces it would help the truck fight against torque steer and on slick surfaces it kept the rear from snapping around in corners. On Pavement or other high bite surfaces, the rear liked to dig in and cause the truck to traction roll. LOL. The Losi Baja Rey Ford Raptor 1/10 RTR 4WD Brushless Desert Truck is the most authentic looking Desert Truck on the market with the performance a race rig and the durability of a basher. Primary Competition: In the 1/6th scale division you won’t find a whole lot of different vehicles, but there is the formidable Traxxas X-Maxx. Jumping: While most solid rear axle vehicles tend to jump with a decidedly nose down pitch, the Super Baja Rey isn’t nearly as bad. Our review time was quite short (more on this in the misc area) and we spent it all in a hardcore off-road environment. With powerful performance and incredible scale looks, the SBR 2.0 takes it to the next level! We were huge fans of the brake rotors and calipers. But Houston, we have a problem. The Losi comes with a huge light bar on the front and a smaller unit on the rear of its cab. Yes, the Baja Rey liked to jump nose down, but not as badly as some of the other vehicles on the market. The Losi can tackle grass several inches tall and generally did a fine job. How hard can you beat on it? You know how this works, read on to find out the scoop… Also, don’t forget to check the video we did at the bottom of the review! Needless to say, our driver couldn’t get enough speed for a launch off the small peak. In October 2019, Losi became the first RC organization to attempt navigation of a lap of the entire 125-mile world-famous Mint 400 racecourse. The internal foam is quite soft just like the actual rubber compound. For us to really get the truck out of shape we had to attack large rock sections (with rocks the size of your shoe) or hit giant whoops made by full sized ATVs at warp 6.
